As I have explained previously on Facebook, this lovely lady approached me about doing a special photo essay with her. Briawna was born blind in one eye; as a result her eye is smaller and is a different color from her other eye. Briawna has always hidden her eye and was tired of it, she decided to face her fears and be photographed as she is. She has been ridiculed and teased her entire life because of this. I am so completely proud of her, and please everyone give her props she deserves it. Briawna is also a fellow aspiring photographer, who is graduating from high school a year early and applying to the Art Institute.
I met Briawna and her mom Christine through my photography. Briawna was one of my first seniors of the season, and a total and complete blast to photograph. I can honestly say that this was one of the most memorable sessions I have had. Briawna radiates positivity and has such charisma; she is hilarious and was down for anything I wanted to do.
At the beginning of her session I noticed her hair over her eye. At this time I was not aware that she was blind in one eye. I just assumed that was her hairstyle for the photographs. After taking a few shots I said “okay let’s do some without your hair over your eye”. At this time she explained to me the circumstances as to why her eye was covered, she also expressed a deep insecurity towards it showing. This made my heart break for her. Not because of her eye but because of the reasons she felt she had to hide it. She has been the center of many jokes, and been called very cruel names throughout her life. I still to this day do not understand how kids get away with this, or why they do it. I would NEVER tolerate such abuse towards others from my kids! If I ever find out they tease someone there are severe consequences. I have zero tolerance for anyone making fun of someone especially due to a physical or mental disability. I cannot stand jokes due to race, sexual preference, or religion (amongst many other things). I fully embrace diversity and would honestly rather not live without it.
I had decided last year when a woman was murdered by the hands of her spouse that I wanted to do something empowering for women through photography. Too many women, young and old struggle with self-esteem issues, and I somehow wanted to help. Briawna has thanked me, and continually says that I have changed her life, however, young beautiful lady you have done the same for me! This session made me realize that this is something I now have to do! Ironically this evening, I was contacted by a foundation and asked to join, and their purpose is this exact issue. I am beyond thrilled and will discuss this further when it is official.
I am truly grateful for the overwhelming amount of support you have all given Briawna! I never expected this to become what it has, and have Briawna and my fans to thank for it. Thank you so very much!
Now here is a note that I asked Briawna to write for this essay:
Bri. The typical nickname I should had been called growing up. A Nickname that a “normal” child would of been given. I was called Cyclops, Pirate, Popeye..and so many more. All because of something I cannot change at all, ever. No surgery can make me normal, or what some people would say, “Pretty”. I was born different. Blind. Two different colored eyes and my blind eye is smaller. Because of such a minor difference I’ve been classified as ‘different’, ‘weird’, ‘hideous’, ‘hard to look at’, and ‘disabled’.
There are only a few things that I can’t do. Only because of my depth perception though. I have grown up play all sports, cheerleading, riding dirt bikes, and even pursuing photography. I’m not all that different, yet everyone made me feel that way. They had me convinced I wasn’t as good as them if my hair wasn’t covering my one eye. I went nearly 17 years, feeling sorry for myself, ugly, unwanted, and less of a person as the person next to me. Not because I thought that of myself looking in the mirror as a child and as I grew up, but because of how people have treated me. I don’t know what honestly got into me to want to do this. I was so scared, worried. Which I should have never been so upset or scared to actually be who I am. No one understands the power of a word. The power of an action. There are some very cruel people out there, but I’m not scared of them anymore; and that’s because I have so many people behind me on this. I’m so grateful for all the kind words I get, because if it wasn’t for those I would be stuck hiding behind my hair being someone everyone else wanted me to be. Shauna Sotelo has changed my life.

Rayleigh Leavitt - Your photography is absolutely stunning!!! And Briawna is a really beautiful young lady. I was teased a lot in school as I great up, because of my weight. Then when I got to college, I found that as people mature, they also become more accepting and loving of people who are different than they are. I hope that Briawna finds more acceptance as she gets older.
Rita - What an awesome story. Briawna you are without a doubt a beautiful young woman. I am sure that in a few years, we will be hearing lots about you and your artistic talents. Keep striving Girl! You rock!
Rod Brown - Take it from an old gay man: You rock. When you smile, your whole face is as priceless as fresh air and sunshine. The asymmetrical braid is killin’, too. Enjoy the art institute. They’re lucky to have you.
Luci Dutton - You are a beautiful young lady! I am going to show this to my 13 yr. old son. He was also born blind in one eye, due to a congenital cataract, and it is smaller also. You are an inspiration to our family!
Rhonda Koch - She is a very pretty young lady, I love all the pictures, and she should be very proud of who she is. I agree with a lot of people that bullies are just jelous of her great smile and personality, I hope you enjoy the art institute. Enjoy life, and every moment of it
Darlene Rodweller - Briawna is a Beautiful young lady!
The bigger her smile the less noticable her blind eye!
Keep Smiling Briawna!!
penny hyde - wow. great photos. awesome young lady. Bri, what a special person you truly are!!!! Courageous, Beautiful and obviously incredibly intelligent!!! How fantabulous of you to have this shoot. Your smile is contageous. I was grinning “like a possum” while looking at your shots. Very creative and absolutely gorgeous. My very faves were the ones where you were smiling and the ones where you laid those awful names where they belonged. In flames and gone!!! Well, thinking back, they were all my faves!!! I hope this is just the beginning of many photos you have made through life as you are way too pretty not to put in print for others to see. You are empowered! You are amazing. You are God’s child and He loves you, just the way you are! You are made in His image. And He is perfect. That makes you perfect too. I feel sorry for those who haven’t been taught we are all just as we are supposed to be. God loves each of us. And if you really get to nit picking, we all have flaws and faults. some are just easier to hide than others. I am not defending the ugly folks at all. But I will bet they found it much easier to call you names than to look at their own issues and fix them. And you rose above their taunts. Good for you. You are one amazing young lady and I am so sure God has great things in store for you. Embrace them and have a life as beautiful as you are!!!!
Christa Elliott - Absolutely breath taking. Both the inner and outer beauty. Stay strong angel. There are so many other young ladies out there whom I’m certain you will, and have inspired. Furthermore… I see no flaws whatsoever. You are a gorgeous young lady and should continue to photograph and flaunt that beautiful face everywhere you possibly can!
Casey White - No Matter What, I Find This Girl To Be Extremely Beautiful. There Is No Need For Anyone To Be Insecure About Something They Can Not Control. She Is Strong
) And Will Meet That Perfect Person For Her. Goodluck Briawna.
Brittany Shillington - Briawna – you are a beautiful girl!! Don’t listen to the worlds negativity… It is all false! In Gods, family and friends eyes you are a beautiful person inside and out. Those are the only comments or opinions that matter! God loves you so much and he made you this way so that u can be a blessing to people like me who need a wake up call to be quite honest! I need to be thankful for people like you who stand up with confidence and say, “It hurt, but you know what I’m not going to let that keep me down, no, I’m going to stand up and tell them that God made me who I am and He has a special plan for me”!! I am so glad I heard your story and will continue to ask God to help me when a negative thought begins to enter my mind about someone … Rethink to myself and say, “God made that person and He has a special plan for them”!!
Thank again for sharing your story Briawna!
~Brit
sammie - Congratulations on a BEAUTIFUL photo shoot! You are amazingly gorgeous and brave!!!!Thank you for sharing!
Emily - You are such a gorgeous young lady. Be proud of yourself for taking this stand. Everyone has insecurities and flaws, but not everyone can take this stand. Congratulating on graduating early and applying to the Art Institute, what an accomplishment!! I hope you realize that most people, children included make fun of people because of their own insecurities and learn by copying role models (parents, teachers, coaches, etc.). I wish you the very best in life and that you achieve your dreams! I can’t wait to be able to see some of your work posted on Facebook and who knows where else.
Christina Renée - This was such an awesome post and story. She’s gorgeous.
Bri - My name is Brianna and I got to the art institute online for photography. She is so beautiful – and a man will look past this little flaw (I have some on my face as well) and see how beauitful her soul is.
I knew a girl whose eyes were 2 different colors – brown and blue and people tried to make fun of her and over 10 people were like “you know nothing about her”. She needs friends whom will stand up for her -I would be one of them.
Erica - Briawna, you are a BEAUTIFUL young lady! I love the words and pictures you both have created. Congratulations and good luck!
Kimberly Heath - My dear, there is nothing about you to be insecure, you are beautiful!! Wow! What wonderful pictures ladies!! Beautiful!!
Shannon Davison - You rock, girl!! You are truly amazing!
Linda H. Monte - You are truly a lovely and amazing young lady!!! Thank you for taking a stand. I know you will help many who have some kind of insecurity whether it be noticed or not.
jacqueline Bruehl - Teasing is such a Powerful Weapon to be in the hands of such Immaturity and the Scars run So Deep! It takes a lifetime to be able to get past the Pain it causes. I Admire you Briawna for having the Courage to get beyond the Pain and realize how Beautiful you really are! NEVER let anyone Make you feel that Bad again!! We are All Gods Creatures and We All Deserve to be Treated with Respect and Dignity! Keep it Up!!! Love To You my Sweet Child of God!
Alanna - what a beautiful and courageous young girl! You are an inspiration!
Katie Parker - Wow, what a brave girl. And absolutely gorgeous! I can’t believe she was being called such names! Shauna, you capture Briawna’s personality & character so beautifully. One can tell that she is a happy, fun, energized teenager. I wish for all the best for this beautiful girl.
Dawn - You are beautiful inside and out. Good for you in embracing who you are! God bless you.
Maggie Phillips - Wow!!! You are seriously one of the most BEAUTIFUL girls I’ve ever seen. Embrace who you are and don’t let anyone that talks down to you make you feel bad. They are probably insecure themselves and that is why they choose to pick on you; and Im sure they also pick on others as well. My point is do not let them get to you…you are strong, young, beautiful women who is incredibly smart!! Trust me they are just jealous!!! Shallow people that are mean and say hateful things will get what’s coming to them. I WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK IN ALL YOU DO!! STAY STRONG**STAY POSITIVE**STAY BEAUTIFUL!!!! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO SOOOOOOOO MANY!!!
<3
gina.raynow@gmail.com - God bless you, Briawna!! You are a beautiful gift. Words are painful, I know, I’ve endured bullying too. Thank you for sharing and for the strength you have found and now share. My prayers of thanksgiving will be with you.
Laura - Beautiful inside and out
Marie - I was so touched after reading this! Briawna is a beautiful young woman, and God’s given her such potential to be great at anything she may choose to do, including photography! Despite all she’s been through with her peers, I’m proud to see that she’s embraced herself through this photo session. She’s definitely an inspiration!
Candy - Such an inspiration and a beautiful young lady. I’m so glad that she’s found the strength and wisdom to believe in herself and quit believing the lies that she’s been told her whole life and to realize that she is gorgeous, and not only that, but so much stronger then many… I love these pictures, they are all so beautiful and deeply meaningful.. What a special opportunity for a photographer to be able to have a part in such a special life event, it makes me think of a shy little cattarpillar discovering that now she is queen of the butterflies:-)
Michael Kinney - Bravo to you both. Brought tears to a grown-man and expecting father’s eyes.
Candy - What an inspiration! And a beautiful girl, so glad she has found
Joy - I love the burning photos and the ones of her down right laughing. Absolutely beautiful!
Anthony Redell - One beautiful model, awesome concept, outstanding execution: Kudos to the model and photographer… Great job!
Leah Tanner - This is what gives me hope for the future, this young lady is the kind of person that all young people need to be. Strong, caring, loving, beautiful…inside as well as out and not afraid to be who they are. Beauty is an amazing thing that many people know nothing about, because to their fickle hearts and ignorant minds, beauty has to fit in a box with a certain wrapping and bow. Beauty is exactly everything Briawna portrays. Beauty is loving yourself for who you are, and what you are. Besides the fact that she is truly beautiful in every aspect, she is what people need to aspire to be like! Thank you so much for sharing this story, I am honored to be able to see such an amazing new chapter open for this young lady and I am so glad that she has been able to do it at a young age, so that she can fully open up and love life. I was literally bawling as I read this, not because I feel at all sorry for her, she has an amazingly bright full future ahead of her; but because of how cruel and senseless people can be. I have the great privilege of teaching high school students and love my students with all my heart, but at times I am so sad by their harshness towards other people, they say things that are horrible like it is nothing! This is the kind of thing that all young people need to see to realize that no matter what people throw at them, it is not them that needs to change, it is the people with such horrible insecurities that need to change, and stop taking out their own hate or self pity on others that may not fight back. Life has a way of coming back around and if you give out hate and hurt others it may take a while but it will somehow catch up to you. I am positive that Briawna will do amazing things and touch many, look at how much of an impact she has had already! I would love to see her photos as she builds her career in photography!

michelle - What a beautiful girl you are are. I am glad this talented photographer helped you see your beauty. Photography is a funny thing, because when we feel our outer beauty, we are brave enough to share our inner beauty. You too will have that ability to bring beauty to others, and I wish you all the success and happiness in life!
Jessica - Bri~ I too was teased in school because I wore glasses. It’s unfair how kids can be so cruel and it’s out of your control. You are beautiful and should walk with your head up hair pulled back because I’m sure you have a big heart and you are just as beautiful in the inside. Only your family and true friends look past your eye as if there was nothing wrong and treat you the same. Congrats on graduating a yr early and going into photography!
Shasta - You are beautiful…inside and out!
Dawn - Briawna, my first thought when i saw you was, “wow, what a beautiful girl! You are a wonderful inspiration for others who don’t have enough strength to stand up and “be”…I am so sorry for what you have endured, I have a daughter who put up with a lot of stuff because of her ears, and it is painful, but for what one eye lacks, the other one is so full of wide-eyed wonder and beauty, it makes up for the other…you go girl! Don’t let anything hold you back…be strong, and thank you so much for sharing YOU with the world…I feel I would have missed something had I not seen these photos. Thank You!
Jessica Peters - I have to say, Briawna, you are a gorgeous person — inside and out. The fact that anyone could say you are otherwise astounds me. You are not alone in being bullied, and the fact that you have chose to do this and become a stronger person and help others who have felt the same. To one previously teased kid to another, thanks. <3
Alaina - Briawna, you are a strong, brave girl, and more beautiful inside and out than anyone who made fun of you. Dont ever doubt yourself with anything. You are helping so many other people going through something like this. I hope your story makes it into everyones home, and hearts!!! Shauna, great pics!!!! Its so nice to see photography used for such a good cause! Thank you for sharing this! Your amazing at what you do!
Lindsey VanTiem - I must say this is one of the most enlightening and beautifully written post I have come across in such a long time. You are one of the most gorgeous young ladies I have seen. Your amazing eye colors are by far the coolest, unique thing that can only make you stand out in a good way. When you leave those hollowed walls of High School and look back you will realize that those small people that continued to hurt you with their words will more than likely never forget the hurt they caused you especially when it comes time for them to have children of school age. All the while taking the hurt, pain and suffering from those cruel words and making yourself move way past it all to push yourself in all aspects of life will only elevate you in ways you never knew you could possibly think of. Because it only gets better and the world is huge with no halls as boundaries. Please know trust in beauty and self worth because you are one incredible girl that has way more to offer everyone you meet. Best wishes beautiful Bri♥

He’s 3 right now but i know that he will go far in life. And im also afraid of him being picked on . So sad that kids have to be so mean. This is beautiful and more of an inspiration to me than you’ll ever know!

jorjewelryvhb - There’s nothing more serious as compared to buying a surprise that you simply hate strongly. You will need to paste a smile on the encounter and wish the actual tilbyder does not realise that you’d like to be able to toss against each other. For this reason people like for present cards ¨C especially if they may be customised present cards; they can rely on them to buy a thing they will really such as.
It is unexpected the number of people don’t like to spend money on on their own, however, if they may be granted a pre-balance credit card ¨C especially a customized gift card or tailor made store vouchers they could spend up without having sensation guilt ridden while they know it was supposed only for these people. Store vouchers Australia are a fantastic present to present somebody who is going on holidays as well as lifestyles inside a distinct condition from you. Lots of people might prefer to receive tailor made surprise cards or perhaps a pre-paid credit card than a surprise.
Gift vouchers Questionnaire, store vouchers Victoria, vouchers Perth and also store vouchers Brisbane are great approaches to deliver a gift in order to somebody in these metropolitan areas. You don’t need to bother about paying out added many for a reward, or perhaps that this reward can get broken being delivered.
It isn’t difficult to find list gift cards or perhaps common present playing cards. Several businesses today provide a corporate and business gift certificate as a possible inducement regarding higher income even though a new customised gift card as well as business giftcard is offered to the people esteemed staff that are going. handmade jewelry
megan - i have always thought people with two different coloured eyes especially interesting and beautiful.
in high school, i was tall and skinny and never really had boobs. i was called “mega-flat” for years (a riff on my name, megan) and people would make jokes like, megan is so flat the walls are jealous. there was also a girl in the same grade as me who had boobs. her name was melony, and she got called melony-melons all the time because her boobs were big.
if it’s not one thing, it’s another. but the minute high school ends….none of it matters anymore. people don’t make fun of you in university or the work place because of how you look. high school is just so cruel.
this girl is so beautiful, and very brave in these pictures. i hope she can see it now – and i know she will in the future. i wish we all, at seventeen, knew just how beautiful we are.
Brooke Pachin - I think she is beautiful!! & no one deserves to be treated like that. I have a scar on my face from getting attacked by a dog when i was 3 & i always go made fun of because of it. & i know that no one is perfect and the scar or blind eye makes us unique & beautiful in a diffrent way!!
<3
Judy Signoriello - Amazing and gorgeous ~ I have to know, did she do her own hair, I would love to learn how she did it!
Brittney L - Dear Briawna,
I truly hope you are reading each and every beautiful comment about you! I was tormented about the way I look as well. I was tall and not a size 0, I got called Shrek, giant, if I wore the color green I was the jolly green giant, people would shout horrible names accross the hallways, I hated myself, the emotional damage that being teased will forever be a part of who I am, and this might sound crazy but I’m so greatful I endured it, because now I’m one of the most accepting, understanding people, I also took a stand for myself my senior year and wrote a letter to the school news paper, I had people coming up and thanking me for standing up, a counselor callled me in one day to tell me that she had so many students coming in to tell her I had inspired them, it was the greatest feeling ever, it was that moment where a burden had been lifted, I was no longer shrek or giant ugly fat, I was me, and if people couldn’t accept me then it was their problem not mine, the reason I share this is I want you to know your not alone, you are now a role model for others, embrace it, help those who could be going through something similiar. I promise you that it does get better! Its not easy but I know that you are strong, and you deserve to truly love yourself and be proud of who you are! You are beautiful inside and out! And what you and shauna did with your photos are incredible, inspirational, and gorgeous! May God Bless You!
Dave Bond - Awesome! You are a beautiful young lady Bri, never forget that! Wonderful job on the photo essay Shauna. I dont mind telling you that it brought a tear to this 54 yr old. Well done
Shelby Hawkins - I have never seen anyone as more beautiful and brave as her
Sarah Lindoff - Briawna, you are beautiful and I hope you know that! FYI my brother was hit in the eye with a paintball when he was a young teen and it caused his eye to go from blue to brown as well as it caused partial blindness… I understand it is not quite like your “situation” but he understands the awkward looks he has received! I personally think his different eye colors is neat, beautiful, unique, and a major part of his life story! Take pride in who you are! In the words of Lady Gaga, you were “Born this way”.
Krystal h - I loved this shoot so much. I literally felt every picture and the emotion with every picture! I love how the beginning of the essay it is sad, and pain, acceptness, and then happiness and loving herself. Oh I tell you that was an amazing shoot that had meaning and you captured it perfectly. New fan of your work and as for the young girl, I love your ownership and courage!
Trish - You are beautiful!! Keep smiling
I love all your photos.
Brittany - Briawna you are so beautiful! The pictures are stunning as are you. The ones of you smiling are so touching. You have a smile that can light up the world. I wish you a life full of happiness!

Tara - Everyone has something that they are insecure about. You are a beautiful young lady and don’t ever let anyone tell you any different. Being made fun of and being called names is never nice and it hurts. Just remember they are just jealous and you will always conquor the world above them and you are already above them for being so strong. Hold your head up high and never hide your eye. God made you that way for a reason and its to show the world that it’s not about what you look like its about the person inside. Your pictures are beautiful…
Nikki - What an amazing and strong young woman! I don’t even know her and I’m proud of the work you two have done here. Briawna, you are beautiful and don’t you dare let anyone tell you different! Good luck in the next chapter of your life! I’m sure it will be fabulous!!
Debi - What a gorgeous young woman. Know what, I think the most beautiful thing about her is that she is so unique. How gorgeous are those eyes? And although she has learned many a difficult lesson, the hardest lesson in life is to learn to be yourself. Who cares what others think about you! It will never change your differences. Besides, do you really want to be like EVERYONE else? BOrInG!
Tamara Motschenbacher - This girl is just beautiful! And inside too. And you are a wonderful woman wanting to help other women with low self esteem. I don’t know why either, how kids can be so cruel. Thank you.
Alan - WOW beautiful pictures, she is a really beautiful girl with a amazing story i am glad she is strong enough to come out like this it takes alot.
Brianna Verdolino - Wow. I came across this through a photography group I’m in, and let me tell you: This is very empowering.
I share a name with this beautiful girl. She deserves to be told she is beautiful, every single day. She’s gorgeous, and these photographs are simply amazing. Being a little “different” isn’t something we should be ashamed of – differences are what makes humans thrive! I’m so impressed with her courage, and everything you’ve said in this post. Thank you for sharing this, and for being a source of support for this young lady. We need more support and love, and less ugliness in this world. (I can’t understand why people are so cruel to others either – but it should never be tolerated!)
Feuza - did not even read, the photos speak for themselves, tears so inspired

Lynn - Oh my goodness, ladies. Beautifully done. I’ve popped over here twice now, and just wanted to tell Briawna that her eyes–my word–having two colors like that is sooo unique and beautiful. I’ll bet all those bullies are just jealous, is what I think.
Emily Chaparro - Beautiful….the essay, the pictures, & Briawna…All BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for sharing.
